Ohio County, WV - The preschoolers from the North Park 4 Center continued their lesson from the Pet Study (Creative Curriculum) with a visit from Mr. Nelson and Oscar from the Ohio County Animal Shelter. Our visit began with Mr. Nelson sharing how dogs are descendants of wolves, and that they are hunters. He mentioned that beagles (the dog that he brought) are hunting dogs. They can sniff out animals using their keen sense of smell. They have even been known to sniff out cancers and diabetes in humans.
He further shared with the children how to safely approach unknown dogs. Never approach them from behind, go slow and use gentle hands. He told us that Oscar eats dry food (Pedigree brand). Mr. Nelson shared the process of adopting dogs from the shelter, and how they end up in the animal shelter in the first place. (They need a safe place and a warm bed just like humans!)
