New Early Head Start Classrooms Open in Marshall County to Serve Toddlers

Northern Panhandle Head Start Inc. (NPHS) is pleased to announce the opening of the newest Early Head Start center-base classrooms to serve toddlers located at the Marshall County Training and Child Care Provider Center on 4th Street (73 Barn Drive) in Moundsville, WV.  The Infant/Toddler Teachers welcomed the classroom of 1-2 yr olds and a second classroom of 2-3 yr olds on Monday, February 11th.  The classrooms will operate year round, Monday-Thursday from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. and Friday's 9 a.m. till 12:30 p.m.

Early Head Start is a federally-funded program in the community to serve pregnant women and families with infant and toddlers. Our mission is to provide comprehensive infant and toddler services, promote healthy prenatal outcomes for pregnant women, enhance the development of very young children and promote healthy families.

NPHS received its first Early Head Start grant in 1999 to serve 48 enrollees thru the home base option in Brooke, Marshall and Wetzel Counties.  With the availability of ARRA funding in 2009, an expansion grant was written to support additional services through a center base option in Ohio County which included outreach to those families with children of incarcerated parents and familes experiencing domestic violence (partnerships with the WV Northern Regional Correctional Jail and the YWCA Family Violence Prevention Program) and  a new home base option in Wetzel County, bringing the funded enrollment to 96.  Through the recent conversion of Head Start services to Early Head Start based on assessing the needs of the community, additional home base services were offered in Hancock, Ohio and Wetzel Counties. With the newest centers located in Marshall County, the total funded Early Head Start enrollment is 132.  Early Head Start (prenatal to age 3) is now available in each county within the NPHS Inc. service area (reference service area map).

“We are very excited to expand our comprehensive Early Head Start services in Marshall County”, shares Marlene Midget, Executive Director.  “According to data collected, there was a need to provide these services to families with children 0-3.  We are thankful for our collaboration with Marshall County Training and Child Care Provider Center where our expansion is housed.”
