Helping to Keep Kids Safe

Michelle Romanek, home visitor, Ohio County MIHOW program, trained beside city police officers, county deputies, and nurses from all areas of West Virginia to become a Nationally Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST). The intensive training included National Highway Traffice Safety Administration standards, the safety features of vehicles, proper installation of all types of child restraints, techniques for correcting unsafe or improper installation, use of the recall manual, and child passenger laws. The event ended with a public car seat check that included participation by several Ohio County MIHOW families.  Reflecting on the importance of this training, Michelle says, “ I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to save a child’s life with proper child restraint installation. I was surprised to hear from our instructor that he has never seen a car seat come through a check that was already properly installed. I am eager to share my newfound knowledge with fellow MIHOW workers and families.”   To remain certified, Michelle must provide community trainings, fill a quota of seat checks and be re-evaluated by an instructor every 2 years.
